ON THE COVER: Arthur R. von Hippel, In Memoriam (1898–2003):
A Tribute to the Interdisciplinary Materials Research He Spawned. This
special issue of MRS Bulletin celebrates the life and work of
Arthur von Hippel, founder of interdisciplinary materials research and
namesake of the Materials Research Society’s highest award. The
cover montage visually suggests the wide range of von Hippel’s interests,
from Lichtenberg figures (far left), to crystal structures (von Hippel
using stick-and-ball models to visualize crystal behavior), to his discovery
of ferroelectricity in barium titanate (photo-micrograph of 90° wedge
domains in single-crystalline BaTiO3, viewed in polarized light,
center), to biological structures (represented by colorful illustrations
of enzyme mimics for the synthesis of materials), and to the art of M.C.

theme that begins on p. 830.
