ON THE COVER: Advanced Fabrics. Materials research is producing innovative textiles that sense the environment, interact with the wearer, and outperform earlier fabrics in new ways. A concept for sprayed-on custom garment manufacturing (foreground, image designed and provided by S. Smith, U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center) uses melt-blown and electrospun fibers (background micrographs). Computational fluid dynamics is being used to model the effects of flow fields around the human body (shown here, a model of a soldier) in order to design fabric systems that protect the wearer from, for example, chemical or biological agents. The interdisciplinarity of materials science is leading to fabrics combined with microelectronics, fiber optics, sensors, and other technologies to create advanced garments like the Wearable Motherboard (pictured), which features a single plastic optical fiber spirally integrated into the fabric. See the technical theme that begins on p. 558.
