The National Science Foundation is soliciting comments on the draft of its updated strategic plan. Comments should be forwarded to stratplan@nsf.gov.

AAAS Analysis of U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) R&D
The DHS will become one of the major funding sources of R&D in FY 2004, with a nearly 60 percent increase from FY 2003 funding, and $148 million more
than the request. Included in this funding for FY 2004 would be $900 million for R&D activities in the new S&T Directorate of the DHS and $890 million for
the non-R&D Project Bioshield to procure biodefense countermeasures. (July 10, 2003)

Nanotechnology Bill Clears House
Boehlert hails "big step for 'small' science"
The full U.S. House passed Science Committee legislation on May 7, 2003, by a vote of 405 to 19, which would authorize a national nanotechnology research and development program. (May 7, 2003)

The AIP State Department Science Fellowship Program
AIP will sponsor at least one Fellow annually to spend a year working in a bureau or office of the State Department. This is an opportunity for a scientist to provide scientific and technical expertise to the Department, and help raise awareness of the value of scientific input, while learning about and contributing to the foreign policy process. New Nanotechnology Bill Introduced
A bill (S. 2945) that would expand on the current National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) was passed unanimously by the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee on September 19.

Members of the House Science Committee today introduced legislation that would place the National Science Foundation (NSF) on a track to double the agency's budget in five years. The bill, H.R. 4664, authorizes a 15 percent increase for NSF for each of the next three years.
