Tribology on the 300th Anniversary of Amontons' Law
1999 MRS Workshop Series

June 20-22, 1999
Fairmont Hotel, San Jose, California

Organizers:
M. D. Drory, Timken Aerospace-MPB
M. O. Robbins, Johns Hopkins University

Mankind's study of friction and wear predates recorded history, but tribology began as a quantitative science with the discovery of Amontons' law: the frictional force between two surfaces is proportional to the load pushing them together.

A workshop on recent advances in tribology will be held to mark the 300th anniversary of this law. Talks will cover experimental studies, molecular simulations, and modeling of a broad variety of material systems at length scales ranging from interatomic spacings to earthquake faults. A broad range of applications will be considered including magnetic storage media, semiconductor processing, MEMS, and tribology in space environments.

Abstracts are solicited for a poster session which should be sent directly to
the chair. Abstracts submitted by mail are due April 15; abstracts submitted via e-mail are due April 30. Publication of extended abstracts is planned.
