"Volcanoes have been my focus and passion for over 20 years," says volcanologist John P. "Jack" Lockwood, President and Chairman of the Board of Geohazards Consultants International, Inc. (GCI). A field-oriented company based in Volcano, Hawaii, GCI specializes in geohazards appraisals and risk reduction studies, especially in remote or less-developed areas.

In addition to overseeing GCI's operations, international marketing and client development, Dr. Lockwood serves as a technical advisor to media projects in film, video and print. He was the lead scientific consultant for the recently released Universal Pictures film Dante's Peak, which he considers "the most realistic, believable, 'volcano adventure film' ever."

In more than 15 years of volcanic-crisis and disaster assignments with the U. S. Geological Survey and the USAID Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), Dr. Lockwood has studied dozens of volcanos.....from Gamalama and Nyragongo to Mt. Pinatubo. Among his clients are the U. S. Air Force, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Lockwood holds a bachelor's degree in geology from the University of California at Riverside, and earned his PhD from Princeton University. Since 1980 he has been an Adjunct Professor at the University of Hawaii, teaching volcanology classes. He is a fellow of the Geological Society of America, and a member of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior, the American Geophysical Union, and Sigma Xi.
