CALL FOR PAPERS
1997 Spring Meeting
Abstract Deadline: November 1, 1996
PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT
The 1997 Spring Meeting encompasses a range of technical symposia
and other activities that include many traditional MRS "staples"
and several new items. There are topical symposia on basic materials
science issues and applications, especially in the area of manufacturing.
Strong relationships between many of the symposia will encourage
interactions among scientists from disparate backgrounds. As ever,
the cutting edge of materials research will be evident at the
meeting and will provide a rich marketplace for the exchange of
ideas and new results.
The symposia feature strong programs in:
- Thin Film Science
- Thin Film Applications
- Materials Processing & Manufacturing
- Polymers
- Electronic and Optoelectronic Materials
- Analytical Techniques
There will be new symposia on Organic Electronic Materials
and Devices; Multilevel Process Integration; Materials/Failure
Analysis for Silicon ULSI Processing,Thermoelectric Materials;
Rapid Prototyping and Solid Freeform Manufacture; and Inorganic-Organic
Composite Solids.
Tutorial reviews related to selected symposia will be offered
in addition to Symposium X: Frontiers of Materials Research.
An exhibit will accompany the technical symposia.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Abstract Deadline: November 1, 1996
Abstracts of contributed papers must be received at MRS Headquarters
no later than November 1, 1996, via one of the following procedures:
ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION
The abstract deadline for the Spring 1997 Meeting was November
1. MRS is no longer accepting electronically submitted abstracts
for this event.
MAIL OR FAX
You may obtain a copy of the Abstract Submission form from the
back of your printed Call For Papers booklet or by clicking here for
a PDF version of the form.
GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING AN ABSTRACT VIA MAIL OR FAX
Heading Information
At the top of the page, include the phrase MRS 1997 Spring
Meeting and the letter and title of the symposium. Your abstract
cannot be processed without this information.
Abstract Input Instructions
Your abstract should be no more than 2-3 paragraphs, or 200-300
words. Type paper title in CAPITAL LETTERS. The text should be
single spaced, with double spacing between paragraphs.
Author Information
At the bottom of the page or on a separate sheet, type or print
clearly all author information, including full name, complete
mailing address, phone, fax and e-mail. Specifically identify
both the presenting and contact authors (only one presenting and
one contact author per paper), as well as each co-author.
In the program book, all authors will appear immediately following
the paper title identified by their affiliation(s), city, state,
and country (if other than U.S.). The presenting author will appear
first and will be underlined. All co-authors will follow alphabetically
by institution and last name.
Submission Instructions
Submit one abstract per paper title (DO NOT SEND DUPLICATE
COPIES) to MRS Headquarters, Attention: Abstract Enclosed,
9800 McKnight Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237-6006; or fax to (412)
367-4373. You will receive an acknowledgment by early December.
If you make revisions to your original abstract, send MRS one
new copy, noting that it is a revised copy and clearly marking
the changes. Identify the abstract with the MRS Abstract Reference
Number provided by MRS in your abstract acknowledgment letter
(if you have already received it).
MRS SYMPOSIUM TUTORIAL PROGRAM
Symposia which will be offering tutorials at the 1997 Spring
Meeting have included that information in the following symposium
pages. MRS tutorials concentrate on new, rapidly breaking areas
of research and are designed to encourage the exchange of information
by meeting attendees during the symposium. Meeting attendees may
participate in all tutorial sessions at no additional fee but
may only purchase tutorial notes by preregistering for the tutorial.
The tutorial schedule will be confirmed and preregistration information
available late January 1997.
PROCEEDINGS
A number of symposia from this meeting will publish proceedings
in the MRS Symposium Proceedings series. Please note:
*camera-ready manuscripts for these proceedings will be refereed
at the meeting. Further information will be provided after the
abstract deadline.
*a listing of these proceedings, as well as an offer for special
premeeting discounted prices, will be sent to all preregistrants
in late summer.
Check your mail for details!
EXHIBIT
Over 120 international exhibitors will display a full spectrum
of equipment, products, software, publications and services --
everything you need to get your job done successfully.
Held April 1-3 in the San Francisco Marriott, the exhibit
is convenient to the technical session rooms and scheduled to
coincide with the technical program. For exhibitors, that means
an excellent opportunity to meet just the right customers and
disseminate information effectively. For meeting attendees, it
offers the convenience of visiting with multiple vendors all under
one roof. So, pick up some literature, enjoy a hands-on product
demonstration, or meet face to face with company representatives.
The 1997 Spring Meeting Exhibit is the perfect complement to the
MRS Technical Program.
Companies interested in exhibiting should contact:

SAN FRANCISCO
San Francisco is known as a crossroads to everywhere. If you
plan on extending your stay in San Francisco before or after the
meeting, you have numerous choices both in the city and nearby.
In this convenient 46.6-square-mile peninsula, you will find cable
cars to ride (one block from the San Francisco Marriott Hotel),
the Cable Car Museum, Fisherman's Wharf, The Presidio (the original
fortress was established by the Spanish in 1776), Old Fort Point
(a Civil War fortress in the Presidio), Mission Dolores (the oldest
structure in the city), Golden Gate Park, the Golden Gate Bridge
with its pedestrian walk open daily, over 40 museums, including
the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum (art), the Asian Art Museum,
the California Academy of Sciences (natural science), and the
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Within easy driving distance are the Sierra Nevada Mountains,
Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, the Monterey-Carmel Peninsula,
Napa and Sonoma Valleys, Sacramento (California's Capitol), Point
Reyes National Sea Shore and Muir Woods, mining towns of the Mother
Lode, the Mendocino Coast, and Silicon Valley.
The temperature in San Francisco is noted for its year-round consistency
- the sea acts as a thermostat. Daytime temperatures seldom rise
above 750, with cooler evenings. If you plan to take
time to explore San Francisco, take a pair of comfortable shoes
and a raincoat for protection against rain or evening fog.
