There are significant opportunities in the areas of layered systems for a variety of structural applications including structural laminates, coated systems for erosion and thermal barrier protection, and functionally graded materials. Layered systems can be processed via a variety of methods in order to produce layered structures which range from the nanoscale to the macroscale. There are significant efforts underway in academia, industry, and government laboratories to exploit the beneficial mechanical and physical properties afforded by such structures. Similar efforts are being devoted to the cost-effective processing/manufacturing, mechanical modeling, and implementation of such materials. The organizers desire to bring together investigators from the various communities (i.e., industry, academia, government) in order to promote active discussion on the opportunities afforded by such materials, as well as the current research issues and barriers to implementation in structural applications.
Papers are solicited in the following areas:
* Structural applications of layered materials
* Structure/property relationships
* Manufacturing/processing techniques for layered systems
* Mechanics issues/modeling of mechanical properties
* Fracture, fatigue, and creep of layered systems
* Layered materials as protective systems (e.g., thermal barrier coatings)
* Interfacial effects on performance of layered material systems
* Morphological stability/control of layered materials at high temperature
* Unique physical/mechanical properties of layered materials
