Symposium J: Thin Films for Photovoltaic and Related Device Applications

Recently there has been considerable progress in the development of thin-film photovoltaic devices with the establishment of new efficiency records and enhanced durability. These achievements have been the result of significant advances in the fundamental understanding of the materials, interfaces, and devices. This symposium, which is a continuation of one last held two years ago, will attempt to bring together investigators looking into different materials systems (CIS, CdTe, amorphous-Si, thin-film Si, and III-V materials) to discuss common issues and problems. The improvement in materials and processing may also enable some of these device structures and materials to be employed in non-PV applications. To this end, we will try to also involve other communities in the symposium to achieve cross-fertilization. Some of the other areas include flat panel display technology, thermophotovoltaics, and thin-film transistors.

Papers will be solicited in, but not limited to, the following areas:

* Absorber materials/heterojunction partners
* Novel deposition approaches
* Transparent conductors
* Contacts/metallizations
* Substrate development
* Antireflection coatings
* Applications of thin-film devices to concentrator cells
* Novel device configurations for energy conversion and flat panel displays
* Manufacturability issues
* Related devices and materials
* Novel analytical techniques applied to thin-film devices

Joint sessions are planned with Symposium A: Amorphous Silicon Technology - 1996; Symposium H:
Flat Panel Display Materials, and, if appropriate, Symposium G: Semiconductors on Insulators - Fundamentals and Technology.

The symposium is planned for four days of oral sessions as well as two evening poster sessions.
