Symposium I: Liquid Crystals for Advanced Technologies

Because of spontaneous molecular self-assembly which enhances molecular properties, liquid crystals have emerged as a class of organic materials with potential applications to optics, photonics, and optoelectronics. Although a large number of liquid crystals has been discovered or synthesized over the years, fundamental understanding of structure-property relationships at the molecular level is still lacking at present. Moreover, new emerging advanced technologies, such as flat-panel displays, optical computing and communications, information storage and imaging, call for improved materials as well as novel multifunctional materials.

Contributed papers are solicited in the following and related areas:

* Design, synthesis, and characterization of novel materials
* Molecular theory and simulation
* Polymer/liquid crystal composite systems
* Liquid crystalline polymers
* Morphology/rheology/processing
* Potential applications
* Implementation in active/passive devices
