Call For Papers / MRS Symposium D
Materials, Integration, and Technology for Monolithic Instruments
Session Topics | Invited Speakers | Symposium Organizers

Monolithic instruments are systems and subsystems that combine conventional integrated circuits with novel solid-state components so that they can interact with their physical environment. Such systems can achieve cost and performance enhancements through integration and miniaturization. Examples include a-Si:H photodiode arrays, OLED-based microdisplays, integrated biological and chemical detection systems, integrated optical and photonic systems, and digital micromirror displays. The goal of this symposium is to provide a forum for scientists and engineers interested in the materials, electrical, and physical design, fabrication, and analysis of monolithic instruments. A non-exhaustive list of materials include those that can be incorporated into integrated circuits, such as (1) deposited semiconductors including a-Si:H and silicon nanocrystals, (2) OLED materials, (3) polycrystalline silicon, (4) chemically active and inert conductors, (5) organic conductors, (6) biocompatible materials, and (7) magnetic thin films. Contributions will be solicited in the areas of a) materials integration into integrated circuits, b) physical behavior of the integrated elements, c) circuit integration and operation, and d) applications. As this is an emerging field, one key aspect of this session is to start bringing together the materials and circuit design communities to foster critical discussion into the creation of monolithic instruments.
