The 2001 MRS Spring Meeting was held from April 16 - 20 at the Marriott and Argent hotels in San Francisco. The technical program was comprised of 32 outstanding symposia. This meeting had several unique features. It started on Monday rather than the traditional Sunday. Full technical presentations began on Tuesday. Nine tutorials were held on Monday, a record at an MRS meeting. The equipment exhibit opened on Monday as well with a reception in the evening, and was open until Wednesday.

Special events included the Plenary and awards session on Wednesday evening at the Argent. The plenary speaker was Prof. Alan Heeger, 2000 Nobel laureate in Chemistry, from the University of California, Santa Barbara. His talk was titled "Semiconducting and Metallic Polymers: The Fourth Generation of Polymeric Materials". The awards session also featured presentation of the Outstanding Young Investigator award to Kristi Anseth of the University of Colorado. Anseth gave her presentation on "New Directions in Photopolymerizable Biomaterials" in Symposium X on Tuesday at 12:45 p.m. The awards function also featured presentation of the graduate student gold and silver awards.

Symposium C featured a talk by Alan MacDiarmid, a 2000 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry as well on "Electronic Polymers". Symposium Q on Femtosecond materials science featured an invited talk by N. Bloembergen on "Femtosecond Science and Material interactions". Bloembergen is co-recipient of the 1981 Nobel prize in Physics. Symposium X, Frontiers of Materials Research included talks on biodetection, photopolymerizable polymers, molecular electronics, transistors, and laminated composites. Poster sessions were scheduled each day from Tuesday - Thursday. Special events included a Women in Materials Science breakfast, and presentations by NSF and DARPA. A student mixer was scheduled for Monday evening, and graduate award finalists gave their presentations on Tuesday.

Highlights, news and photographs from the meeting were posted at this site daily from San Francisco.
