SPECIAL FUNCTIONS

Outstanding Young Investigator
A. Paul Alivisatos
University of California-Berkeley
"Symmetry Effects in Semiconductor Nanocrystals"

Wednesday, April 19
5:00 p.m., Marina E/F
San Francisco Marriott

This MRS award has been established to recognize outstanding interdisciplinary materials research by a young scientist or engineer and will be presented to A. Paul Alivisatos, University of California-Berkeley, during the Plenary Session on Monday, April 17, at 6:00 p.m. in the Presidio Room. Alivisatos will present his talk on Wednesday, April 19, at 5:00 p.m. in Marina E/F.

Graduate student award winners who are presenting significant and timely research at the 1995 Spring Meeting as an author or co-author of a symposium paper will receive their awards during the Plenary Session on Monday evening, April 17.

Electronic Publications Initiatives: Technical societies and commercial publishers must begin to experiment with the use of electronic systems in a variety of ways that can enhance the value of published material for the research and applications community.

Electronic systems available today may be used to assist and improve the various functions of publishing, such as: abstract or manuscript submission * peer review process editorial setup and printing * delivery of a technical article, journal, book or database *search and retrieval * archival storage; libraries.

This forum is intended to provide up-to-date reports on new initiatives of technical publishers and demonstrations of the state of the art in action. It is also intended to promote thought and discussion about how MRS may best apply electronic formats in the near future to enhance the dissemination of materials research articles and information. Opinions and ideas from participants and from all MRS members will be solicited.

Publisher's Displays: Monday, April 17, 7:30 - 9:00 p.m.; Tuesday, April 18, 8:30 a.m. - noon: Mezzanine Hallway

Interactive displays and descriptive material from commercial publishers and technical societies publishing books and journals: The displays will demonstrate software developed for all phases of the manuscript submission, reviewing and editorial process, and for search/retrieval and delivery/display/printing of articles by the reader/customer. Hands-on test-drive displays will be encouraged.

Electronic Publishing Initiatives Forum
Tuesday, April 18, 7:00 p.m., Nob Hill Room

Symposium X, Frontiers of Materials Research, presents a series of authoritative reviews for the nonspecialist. Box lunches are available for purchase at the door for noon-time talks for your convenience. Be sure to check the Meeting Guide available at the Meeting for final scheduling details.

PLENARY SESSION

Robert Langer
Kenneth J. Germeshausen Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering
Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Monday, April 17, 1995
6:00 p.m., Presidio Room
San Francisco Marriott

Langer will focus on two important applications of biomaterials: drug delivery systems and tissue engineering. A theme interspersed throughout this talk is that materials scientists can play a major role in medical research by intentionally synthesizing materials for medical applications in sharp contrast to the current approach which has largely involved using off-the-shelf materials to address these problems.

MEETING ACTIVITIES

A major exhibit displaying the latest analytical and processing equipment will be held Tuesday afternoon through Thursday in the Buena Vista/Sea Cliff Ballrooms, San Francisco Marriott, adjacent to the technical meeting rooms. Meeting participants are invited to attend a reception on Tuesday evening from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the Exhibit area.

Complimentary coffee will be available during morning and afternoon breaks in the Exhibit area, Tuesday afternoon through Thursday morning. Box lunches will be available Tuesday through Thursday during the noon break.

Job Placement Bulletin Board: A Job Placement bulletin board for MRS meeting and short course attendees will be open Tuesday through Thursday during the 1995 Spring Meeting adjacent to the Exhibit. For Job Placement information, contact: June Maier, Membership Department, Materials Research Society, 9800 McKnight Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237-6006; (412) 367-3004, ext. 402 * Fax (412) 367-4373 * E-Mail: info@mrs.org. Note: Onsite management of the MRS Job Placement Service will be by representatives of the MRS University Chapter of University of Rochester.

Proceedings: Many symposia from this meeting will publish proceedings. MRS members and meeting attendees may purchase copies of these proceedings at special prepublication prices and receive priority shipment upon publication. Prices will be higher following the meeting. To take advantage of these special prices, order your proceedings while registering for the meeting. For information on nonmember proceedings prices and ordering procedures, contact the MRS Publications Department.

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

Symposium Aide Positions: Graduate students who plan to attend the 1995 Spring Meeting and are willing to assist in the symposium presentations by operating audio-visual equipment are encouraged to apply for a Symposium Aide position. By working a minimum of four half-day sessions, aides will earn a waiver of the student registration fee, a full-year MRS student membership (July 1, 1995, through June 30, 1996) and a small stipend to help defray expenses. Symposium preferences are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis. To request an application form and/or information, contact MRS Headquarters, (412) 367-3004 * Fax (412) 367-4373.

Student Mixer: All graduate students and members of MRS University Chapters are invited to attend a reception on Monday, April 17, from 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the San Francisco Marriott. Student chapters are a vital part of MRS, providing discussion between students and faculty and promoting student interest in materials science. Don't miss this opportunity to meet with others involved in MRS student activities.

SHORT COURSE AND TUTORIAL PROGRAM

The Materials Research Society will present eight (8) short courses and three (3) tutorials at the 1995 Spring Meeting. The short courses focus on the characterization, preparation, and fabrication of advanced materials and related matters. The tutorials are designed to inform individuals about subjects that are outside their immediate area of interest or to better acquaint them with an area that they may be newly entering. The Short Course and Tutorial Program is held in parallel with the Meeting at the same location, and the schedule is arranged so that course attendees can attend short courses, tutorials, and symposia on related subjects.

Participants in any type of materials research, development, or processing - from industry, university, or government laboratory - are invited to take advantage of the educational service offered by this outstanding program. Class sizes are limited. We encourage you to REGISTER EARLY to ensure your place in these stimulating and vital courses!
