A listing of events unique to the 2005 MRS Fall Meeting
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Model Car Challenge | Wearables Runway – A Revolution in Textiles

MRS Hydrogen Fuel Cell Model Car Challenge

Monday, November 28
Third Level, Hynes Convention Center
9:00AM – 2:00PM Car Assembly, Boylston Hallway
2:30PM – 3:30PM Competition, Ballroom B

This exciting outreach activity will offer students from local area high schools a hands-on, active learning experience about hydrogen (definitely, the fuel of the future), fuel cells, and car building, from experts in these fields. Student teams will design and assemble their own hydrogen fuel-cell-powered model cars on site, and then take part in a little “friendly competition” to see whose car goes the fastest. In addition to “bragging rights,” winners will receive trophies to proudly show their friends and display in their school showcases.

Stop by the Boylston Hallway throughout the day to watch the cars being assembled, and then come early to Ballroom B … to get a good view of the mid-afternoon races and to cheer for your favorite!

In addition to MRS , this special activity is sponsored by General Motors, the Department of Energy and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Wearables Runway – A Revolution in Textiles
A Live Display of Technologically Advanced Clothing Made Possible by Materials Research

Tuesday and Wednesday, November 29-30
MRS Exhibit Hall, Second Level, Hynes Convention Center
2:30PM – 3:30PM

This is a coffee break with a twist …a fashion show featuring some of the most unique and advanced clothing and accessories made possible by materials research. The integration of new functionality into textiles and clothing is progressing at revolutionary speed, as specialists in materials research, electronics, and fashion discover ways to use new fabrics and fibers to help achieve new functions. Future clothes can become a virtual skin that can act and think autonomously, save us in cases of emergency, warn us of dangers, and help monitor our health. Recent successes include integration of solar cells, flexible displays and lighting in fabrics.

Join us on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon (or both), and catch the revolution! Manufacturers and laboratories will display their wares during these special afternoon events, which are co-sponsored by MRS and the University of Paderborn.
