This competition
is designed around the concept of a virtual team – individuals
dispersed in time and space, but linked by the Internet. Each team must
include one materials researcher who is currently an MRS member in good
standing, and one business school student, but are otherwise quite flexible.
Team members can use postings on this website to find each other, or
they can locate appropriate partners outside this website.
To use the website
to form your team, materials researchers (MRS members) can
post their ideas along with their resumes
and business school students can post their resumes. Once you have
identified a potential partner, call/email the prospective team member
using the contact information posted. Team members are expected to
collaborate primarily by email or conference call, with no requirement
for in-person meetings. Entry presentations
are also virtual, in the sense that no in-person presentation
is required for the entry submission. Each team will create
a narrated PowerPoint
presentation and mail
the resulting file on CD-ROM to MRS where they will be
posted for remote judging by the panel of venture capitalist
judges.
Opportunities
for teams to get together in person include an information session
at the Sheraton Boston Hotel (Monday, November 28, 8 pm) at the 2005
MRS Fall Meeting for
all team members to meet each other, as well as network with
corporate sponsors, mentors, and members of the task force
who created the competition. In addition, the Semi-Finalists
are expected to give an in-person presentation (date TBD)
at the San Francisco Marriott Hotel at the 2006
MRS Spring Meeting, to introduce their work to the MRS
membership. A celebratory dinner for Semi-Finalists on that
same evening will allow them to further network with corporate
sponsors, judges, and interested venture capitalists.
